Medical ID Jewelry Frequently Asked Questions

ENGRAVING

  • What medical diagnoses should go on a medical alert?
    +
    • When deciding what to put on your medical alert, think about conditions that are most likely to cause an emergency (EG: Diabetes or epilepsy) or be relevant during emergency treatment (EG: Blood thinner use, drug allergies). Less vital information is more appropriate for a wallet card or online health profile.

“I [am] concerned with meds that have severe reactions to other common emergency medicines. For medical conditions I am usually only worried about conditions that can cause an actual medical emergency, example, lethal cardiac arrhythmia, cancer or tumors that are a likely cause of this problem.” - Josh, RN, BSN

  • Do people put their medications on their medical IDs?
    +
    • This depends on the medication. When starting something new, it’s a good idea to ask your doctor whether you need to update your engraving. Additionally, some prescriptions even come with advisories about this, such as blood thinners. If you have a lot of medications, or they change frequently, you may want to include, “See Wallet Card,” and carry an updated list of what you’re taking. You can add a wallet card to your order here.
  • Should I put my allergies on my medical alert?
    +
  • How do I abbreviate my engraving?
    +
  • Is it safe to put my name on my medical ID? What about my social security number?
    +
    • We highly recommend including your name on your ID. You may be separated from your wallet or phone in an emergency. Without your name, it is much harder for first responders to identify you and for a hospital to access your medical records.
    • We do not recommend engraving your social security number, as it is not helpful to first responders and, if you should lose your jewelry, it puts this sensitive information at risk.
  • I made a mistake on my engraving. What should I do?
    +
    • Customer Service is available by phone or email between 8a and 4:30p US Central time, Monday through Friday. You can Contact Us here.
  • What should I engrave on my medical ID?
    +

When you’re wondering what to put on a medical alert bracelet, start with the basics. Over 80% of first responders participating in our 2020 survey stated that custom-engraved medical alert jewelry is the most effective form of medical ID you can wear. So it’s important to choose custom engraving and include the right information. Here are some helpful tips for anyone asking what information you should put on a medical alert bracelet.

    • Name - If you are unable to communicate, it is vitally important that you be identified rapidly. The first step to accessing your medical records is having your name. In emergency scenarios, phones sometimes get lost, and purses get left behind. It’s important to have your name right there on your medical ID jewelry.
    • Chief medical conditions - If you have several, consider prioritizing the ones that are most relevant to emergency medical support. Your health care provider’s nursing staff can usually help with this over the phone if you are not sure.
    • Allergies - Again, you’ll want to consider what’s relevant here. For example, people typically prioritize food, drug, and insect allergies.
    • Emergency Contact(s) - Your emergency contact number(s), preceded by the letters, “ICE” for, “In Case of Emergency,” are important. We recommend listing cell phone numbers for faster access.
    • Hospital System - If space allows, EMTs recommend listing the hospital where your records are held. While that does not guarantee you will go to that hospital, it provides helpful information as to how to access your records if needed.

“A preferred hospital or one ...that has all [your] records would be an added bonus, especially if you live in a city with multiple hospitals.” -David B., NRP

SIZING & RESIZING

  • Can I just measure my old bracelet to figure out what to order?
    +

We test every med ID bracelet to determine how to provide the best fit for that particular style. For this reason, we ask that you review the sizing instructions provided on the product page for your chosen style before ordering. In most cases, we simply ask for your snug wrist measurement. Not sure how to measure your wrist accurately? Visit our Measuring Guide for tips!

    Did you know?
You may own several LH med ID bracelets, all sized for your exact wrist measurement, and they will likely vary in size when laid out straight. This is because every bracelet design lays and fits a little differently, and we accommodate for that when filling your order. That’s why we always ask for your snug wrist measurement rather than asking for your bracelet size or asking for the length of a previously purchased style: so we can give you just the right fit every time.

  • Why do I need to measure my wrist?
    +
    • We want to ensure that your bracelet fits well the first time so you can start wearing it right away. Because even an inch can make a big difference in how your bracelet fits, we ask that you measure your wrist so we can provide a great fit every time you order.
  • How do I measure my wrist?
    +

Using a soft measuring tape (dressmaker’s tape), take a snug measurement of your wrist starting at the 0.

Don’t have a soft measuring tape? In a pinch, you can use a piece of string or even dental floss, wrap that around your wrist, and then lay it against a flat ruler to determine your wrist size.

  • How do I know what bracelet size to order?
    +

We’ll custom size your bracelet for a fit that’s not too tight or too loose.

    • Snugly measure your wrist.
    • Select your wrist size from the dropdown menu.
    • We’ll add the appropriate length to create a comfortable fit.
If you’re ordering an interchangeable style, you will need to follow these steps whether you need a bracelet with a tag OR the bracelet portion only.
  • My bracelet doesn't fit. Can it be resized?
    +

Absolutely. Swap your unworn med ID for a different size of the same style within the first 30 days. Jeweler service fees are waived. We will charge your card on file for associated return shipping and handling fees.

Need it larger but don't want to send it in?
Email info@laurenshope.com to see what complimentary parts may be available to prevent you from having to send your bracelet in for resize.

  • How do I send a bracelet in to be resized?
    +

    1. If your medical ID tag is removable, take it off and send the bracelet strand only. If the tag is affixed, do not try to remove it.

    2. Print and complete the correct Service Request Form and enclose it in a PADDED MAILER with your Lauren's Hope product. Do not send product in a letter envelope. There is a chance the product could fall out or be damaged in the mail if it is not in a padded mailer.

PLEASE NOTE: Lauren's Hope is not responsible for lost or damaged incoming shipments; we encourage you to properly pack, track, and insure your package.

    3. Send the item to:

GENERAL

  • Where can I get a free medical alert ID bracelet?
    +
    • People often ask, “Do you have free medical IDs?” We do offer a free downloadable medical ID emergency wallet card, which you can customize and print as often as you’d like. For help obtaining a free medical alert bracelet, you may want to consult your physician’s office, local hospital’s community outreach department, or local health department.
  • Will I get a chance to offer a Lauren’s Hope product review?
    +
    • Yes. You will receive an email inviting you to provide a review with or without photos. We hope you will share your feedback with us!
  • What is medic alert jewelry?
    +
Medical alerts are bracelets and necklaces marked with a medical caduceus or staff of life symbol, which indicates the presence of medical information. 95% of first responders check the neck and wrist for medic alert jewelry, which can include pendant or dog tag necklaces as well as a variety of bracelet types, such as hypoallergenic cuffs, classic med ID chains, stretch styles, silicone med alert bands, and more.
  • What is the best medical alert bracelet to buy?
    +
The best medical ID bracelet is one you like and will wear daily. Here are a few other things to consider when shopping for the best medic alert bracelet:
    • • How much engraving space do you need? Our interchangeable styles have some of the largest engraving allowances.
    • • Will you wear your medical alert bracelet around the clock? If so, look for a stainless steel or silicone medical alert band for water-friendly, 24/7 daily wear.
    • • Will your information change? Interchangeable med IDs allow you to replace your medical alert tag without replacing all of your bracelets.
  • What style of alert jewelry is right for me?
    +

Deciding on a style of medical alert jewelry will help you narrow down your choices. Consider who will be wearing this medical alert. Are they:

    • • Stylish, fashion-forward: Consider an interchangeable medical alert bracelet. Made of a bracelet strand and medical alert tag, both pieces can be mixed and matched with others, allowing for a fresh look every day.
    • • Active and sporty: Silicone and stainless steel med alerts are best for highly active individuals who want to wear their med alerts during outdoor, water, and sports activities.
    • • Young and growing: Kids who like their medical alerts are much more likely to wear them. Help your child choose a med alert by visiting our boys’ and girls’ sections.
  • Who needs to wear a medical ID?
    +

Wondering who needs a medical alert bracelet? People wear medical ID bracelets to alert first responders and good samaritans to these and many more conditions and treatment considerations. Read about more conditions and what to engrave on your medical alert jewelry here:

  • Why do I need a medical ID?
    +

Over 60 million Americans have a medical condition which should be immediately known by first responders in the event of an emergency. EMT and first responders are trained to look for a medical alert. Medical identification alerts first responders to your vital medical information as well as your name and emergency contact information. With proper medical identification, a first responder may be made aware of your condition, providing the information that may assist them in treating you properly.

If you are a caregiver, then you should also wear a medical ID to alert emergency personnel of your loved one who needs attention. Let your medical identification jewelry speak for you when you can't.

  • Which medical ID is right for me?
    +

It’s important to note that every custom-engravable medical ID is just that: custom engravable. That means the same Lauren’s Hope medical ID will work whether you need a medical ID for diabetes, lymphedema, gastric bypass, or any other condition.

95% of first responders report they check the neck and both wrists of unresponsive patients, so despite the type of medical ID you choose, in an emergency, your medical ID may advocate for you.

Interchangeable medical ID bracelets: When you opt for an interchangeable medical ID, you’re purchasing a bracelet strand with lobster clasps at both ends and a removable medical ID tag. You can purchase multiple strands and continue using the same medical ID tag. If any of your personal information changes, you can simply replace the custom-engraved medical ID tag.

Traditional medical ID bracelets: Non-interchangeable or traditional medical IDs have affixed medical ID tags for an all-in-one solution.

Medical ID Cuffs: Cuffs are extremely easy to wear. Pull gently to open, put it on, and squeeze tighter for just the right fit every time. Cuffs are an excellent option for people who experience swelling of the extremities, those with dexterity challenges, and those who have had bariatric surgery and are looking for the ultimate in adjustability.

Medical ID necklaces and custom-engravable dog tags: Sometimes, people simply prefer medical ID necklaces to bracelets. Other times, people choose necklaces because they cannot wear bracelets in the workplace.

  • Who is Lauren?
    +

Lauren Philips is the company’s namesake. Lauren’s Hope was founded when Lauren, then 13, refused to wear an unattractive, traditional medical ID bracelet for her Type 1 Diabetes. Her mom reached out to a friend who made jewelry, asking for a pretty custom bracelet for Lauren, and the rest is history.

You can read more about Lauren’s story here.

  • Can I wear my bracelet in the shower or pool?
    +

Lauren’s Hope carries medical ID jewelry in a variety of styles and materials, some of which are more water-friendly than others.

All of our jewelry is appropriate for hand-washing and showering, although sterling silver is less prone to tarnish when kept dry.

Beaded, sterling, and macrame (cotton and leather) bracelets are not appropriate for wear in pools and hot tubs. For this type of water wear, we highly recommend stainless steel, paracord, and silicone medical ID jewelry.

ABOUT JEWELRY

  • What information goes on a medical alert bracelet?
    +

Every custom-engraved medical ID is different. The purpose of a medical alert is to convey the most vital information that emergency medical personnel are likely to need. This is unique to the wearer and their conditions. For instance, when people ask what to put on a medical alert bracelet for pacemaker warnings, it is, of course, different than what to write on a medical alert bracelet for food or drug allergies. A medic alert bracelet might indicate what hospital holds your records.

Learn more about what information should be engraved on a medical alert bracelet here.

  • Why do I need a medical ID?
    +

In an emergency, seconds count. Whether the emergency situation was caused by your medical condition or could be further complicated by your diagnosis, EMTs and other first responders need to know who you are, how best to help you, and what to avoid in order to prevent unnecessary delays, ambulance rides, ER visits, allergic reactions, or other complications.

Medical ID jewelry keeps your information on hand, which is particularly important as studies show that:

    • During 30% of visits, patient records cannot be located.
    • Ineffective communication during patient transitions (i.e. from ambulance to ER) contributes to 80% of all serious medical errors.
    • Medication errors cause over 7,000 deaths and 500,000 injuries annually, many of which can be prevented.
  • Do I need more than one ID?
    +
We recommend having more than one piece of alert jewelry so that you always have a backup in case one gets lost. Most people end up with a few different medical IDs so they can change their jewelry to suit their mood or activity. It’s also a good idea to carry a medical information wallet card.
  • When do I need to wear my medical alert?
    +
Your ID can only help you if you’re wearing it, so we recommend wearing it at all times.
  • Do people wear mental health medical alert jewelry?
    +
Absolutely. When people have mental health challenges, cognitive impairments, developmental disabilities, and other concerns that impact a person’s daily functioning and/or ability to communicate, a custom-engraved ID can offer fast access to answers and emergency contact numbers, in addition to providing peace of mind for loved ones. Search by condition to learn what to put on a mental health medical ID.
  • Do medical IDs work in emergencies? Do first responders look for them and use them?
    +

Yes. In the 2020 Lauren’s Hope First Responder Survey, we polled over 100 EMTs, paramedics, and Emergency Room medical staff:

    • 100% of first responders were familiar with medical alert jewelry and knew how to identify it.
    • Over 95% report that medical alerts improve patient outcomes (EG: faster diagnosis, avoidance of allergens, fewer tests)
  • What benefits are there to wearing a medical alert?
    +

Your med ID is designed to provide access to your vital information quickly in an emergency. There are several benefits to this, including providing opportunities for first responders to:

    • More rapidly identify the cause of your emergency
    • Speed up the time to treatment
    • Avoid medications to which you are allergic
    • Protect you from treatments or tests that your history or condition(s) prohibit (EG: No blind intubation for weight loss surgery patients, no BP/IV/Needles in a limb at risk for lymphedema)
    • Prevent unnecessary ER visits, tests, and hospitalizations
    • Contact your loved ones quickly

"Having a custom-engraved medical alert may reduce unnecessary testing. This could have all kinds of benefits like avoiding a trip to the ER, reduced cost of admission, avoiding radiation from unnecessary scans, reduced length of stay and the list goes on." -Dr. Evan Russell, DO, MBA, Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician

  • How often should I buy a new medical alert?
    +
Most people buy a new ID at least once a year. This helps you:
    • Build a collection so you always have a backup.
    • Ensure you have up-to-date information engraved.
    • Stay on trend with your jewelry.

We recommend you replace your jewelry anytime:

    • Your medical or emergency contact information changes.
    • Your jewelry is lost or damaged.
    • You’re ready for a new look!
  • What is an interchangeable or, “Mix and Match” bracelet? What is a non-interchangeable bracelet?
    +
    • Interchangeable bracelets, also called Mix & Match bracelets, are the most flexible, cost-effective medical IDs you can buy. They are composed of two pieces:
      • A custom-engravable ID tag
      • A bracelet strand with a lobster clasp closure on each end.
    • They offer a variety of benefits:
      • You can move your tag from one bracelet to another. This means once you own an ID tag, you can add as many of our bracelets as you’d like to your collection without having to buy another ID tag each time.
      • If your engraved information needs an update, you can simply buy a new tag and use that with all of your existing interchangeable bracelet strands. There’s no need to discard all of your jewelry just because a phone number needs updating!
  • Do you have USB Medical IDs?
    +
    • No. Our research shows that USB medical alerts are ineffective. First, if you lose a USB ID, your information is compromised and irretrievable. Second, in our 2020 Lauren’s Hope First Responder Survey, 100% of responding medical professionals told us they absolutely NEVER use USB medical ID flash drives because they:
      • Do not have time to access this information pre-hospital.
      • Do not have a laptop or other portable device handy in the field.
      • Have organization-level policies against inserting patients’ devices into hospital or ambulance systems due to data security, HIPAA, and data privacy concerns.

“EMS generally doesn't have the time or resources to check on USB or other types of electronic medical IDs.” - Emma R., EMT-B

  • Is there a difference between a medical alert and a medical ID?
    +
Medical alert jewelry goes by several names: Medical ID, medical alert, medic alert, emergency ID, and more. No matter what you call it, a medical alert bracelet or necklace is a piece of jewelry designed to communicate your personal information in the event that you cannot speak for yourself.
  • Who needs to wear a medical ID? What medical conditions require a medical alert bracelet?
    +

If you have a medical condition that could cause an emergency or that a first responder or emergency room physician would need to know in an emergency situation, you need to wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace.

Here are just some of the many conditions that require a medical alert:

    • Adrenal Insufficiency / Addison’s Disease
    • Alzheimer’s / Memory Impairment
    • Asthma
    • Autism
    • Autoimmune Disorders
    • Blood and Bleeding Disorders
    • Contact Precautions
    • Developmental Disabilities and Cognitive Impairments
    • Diabetes
    • Drug allergies
    • Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
    • Food allergies
    • Hearing Impairments
    • Heart Conditions
    • Malignant Hyperthermia
    • MRI Restrictions
    • Myasthenia Gravis
    • Pacemaker Use
    • Stroke History
    • Vision Impairments

See more conditions that require a medic alert here.

  • How do medical IDs work?
    +
Medical alert bracelets and necklaces are custom-engraved with your vital information, so it is readily available in an instant. EMTs, first responders, and other emergency medical personnel are trained to check the neck and wrists of non-responsive and disoriented patients for the medical caduceus or star of life symbols, which indicate the presence of your medical information.
  • Which wrist should I wear my medical alert bracelet on?
    +
Most people wear medical alert bracelets on their non-dominant hand, much the way people usually do with watches. However, 95% of first responders report that they check the neck and both wrists for medical identification jewelry, so the choice is more about what’s comfortable for you.

        • Once you place your order, we’ll do the rest!
  • How do I get a medical ID bracelet? What stores sell medical ID bracelets?
    +
    • The best way to get a medical alert bracelet is to order a custom-engraved medical ID online, and not from a brick-and-mortar store, for two primary reasons:
      • First, drugstore medical IDs are typically of low quality, so they don’t hold up, and they are often made with base metal that can irritate the skin. Lauren’s Hope uses only the highest quality materials, such as hypoallergenic stainless steel and sterling silver, and everything we sell is covered by the Lauren’s Hope warranty.
      • Second, cheap medical IDs sold in stores are generically engraved with single terms and phrases like, “Diabetes,” or, “See wallet card.” While these pieces of information are helpful, they’re nowhere near as effective as a custom-engraved medical alert that lists your name, all of your conditions and allergies, and your emergency contact information. In fact, in our 2020 Lauren’s Hope First Responder Survey, over 80% of EMTs and Paramedics agreed that custom-engraved medical alert jewelry is the most effective type of medic alert you can buy.
  • Do you have a catalog or printed brochure?
    +
    • We do. If you would like a printed brochure, please request one here. Please note that our brochures have a small selection of our available products. Shopping online at www.laurenshope.com is the best, fastest way to see our most current offerings.
  • What are your hours?

  • Which medical ID is right for me? What is better? A medical alert necklace or bracelet?
    +
    • The best medical alert is one you like, want to wear, and have had engraved with your current medical and emergency contact information. First responders are trained to check the neck and both wrists, so you can choose any medical alert necklace or bracelet you prefer, and we will size and custom engrave it just for you.
