Cephalosporins are some of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics on the market because they tend to be effective for common bacterial infections such as staph infections, strep throat, bronchitis, and tonsillitis. Like all antibiotics, some people are allergic to some or all of the drugs in this family. The reactions can be mild, moderate, or severe. Severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening situations including anaphylaxis.

A CEPHALOSPORIN ALLERGY ALERT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

As with any allergy that may result in anaphylaxis, we highly recommend wearing medical ID jewelry at all times if you are allergic to cephalosporins for a variety of reasons:

  • If you are allergic to cephalosporins and take a new prescription not knowing that the drug falls in this family, your reaction may be worse than with previous exposures, leaving you unable to verbally advocate for yourself.
  • If you are in an accident or emergency situation and require antibiotics, those treating you need to know that you have drug allergies and they need to know specifically which drugs to avoid.
  • If you have a reaction to any medication, EMTs and ER physicians need to know that you have drug allergies, as this is critical information that will better enable them to treat you.
  • If your child has a cephalosporin allergy, s/he may not remember or be able to tell EMTs or other First Responders this in an accident or emergency setting.

If you have a cephalosporin allergy, wearing medical ID jewelry is imperative. We recommend listing your name, diagnosis(es), any medications, all allergies, and multiple emergency contact numbers. We also recommend discussing what to engrave with your doctor or nurse. They often have the best suggestions!

Here are some examples of what to engrave on a cephalosporin allergy medical ID:

What type of medical ID is right for me?

Our custom-engravable medical ID jewelry is just that: custom engravable. That means you can choose whatever style you like because the same Lauren’s Hope medical ID will work for any condition.
  • Interchangeable medical ID bracelets

An interchangeable medical ID is composed of a bracelet strand with a lobster clasp at either end and a removable medical ID tag. You can purchase multiple strands and continue using the same medical ID tag. If your personal information changes, you can simply replace the custom-engraved medical ID tag.
  • Non-interchangeable medical ids

Non-interchangeable or traditional medical IDs have affixed medical ID tags for an all-in-one solution.
  • MEDICAL ID CUFFS

Pull gently to open, put it on, and squeeze tighter for the right fit every time. Cuffs are an excellent option for people who experience swelling of the extremities, those with dexterity challenges, and those who have had weight loss surgery and are looking for the ultimate in adjustability.
  • MEDICAL ID necklaces

While some people simply prefer medical ID necklaces to bracelets, others choose necklaces because they cannot wear bracelets in the workplace. In any case, EMTs and other first responders are trained to check neck and both wrists for the internationally recognized medical symbol.
