People who are severely hard-of-hearing or are profoundly deaf can sometimes benefit from an electronic device called a cochlear implant. These devices are surgically implanted in the recipient with one portion underneath the skin and one behind the ear itself. Although cochlear implants do not enable people to hear “normally,” they provide useful auditory feedback that, with extensive therapy, people can learn to interpret as speech. These devices are significantly different from traditional hearing aids, which simply amplify sound.

A COCHLEAR IMPLANT MEDICAL ID OFFERS DAILY PROTECTION

Being profoundly deaf or extremely hard-of-hearing is a chronic condition, and as such, it is information that EMTs and emergency room personnel need to know in the event of an accident or injury. As only an estimated 220,000 people worldwide have cochlear implants, it’s not something all doctors or EMTs are familiar with, and it’s important that they realize right away that the person whom they are treating may not be able to hear or understand them properly, particularly if the implant has been damaged in an accident.

Even without a cochlear implant, those who are profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing should wear medical ID bracelets to alert EMTs to their baseline condition so that these first responders are aware that a patient’s inability to hear is not a new symptom or injury. We recommend listing your name, diagnosis(es), device(s). any medications, all allergies, and emergency contact numbers. Here are some examples of what to engrave on your cochlear implant medical ID bracelet:

What type of medical ID is right for me?

Our custom-engravable medical ID jewelry is just that: custom engravable. That means you can choose whatever style you like because the same Lauren’s Hope medical ID will work for any condition.
  • Interchangeable medical ID bracelets

An interchangeable medical ID is composed of a bracelet strand with a lobster clasp at either end and a removable medical ID tag. You can purchase multiple strands and continue using the same medical ID tag. If your personal information changes, you can simply replace the custom-engraved medical ID tag.
  • Non-interchangeable medical ids

Non-interchangeable or traditional medical IDs have affixed medical ID tags for an all-in-one solution.
  • MEDICAL ID CUFFS

Pull gently to open, put it on, and squeeze tighter for the right fit every time. Cuffs are an excellent option for people who experience swelling of the extremities, those with dexterity challenges, and those who have had weight loss surgery and are looking for the ultimate in adjustability.
  • MEDICAL ID necklaces

While some people simply prefer medical ID necklaces to bracelets, others choose necklaces because they cannot wear bracelets in the workplace. In any case, EMTs and other first responders are trained to check neck and both wrists for the internationally recognized medical symbol.
