Asthma is a fairly common condition, slightly more prevalent in children than adults and more common in girls and women than in boys and men. Nearly 8% of the US population has asthma, although the severity of the condition varies by person. As well, the prevalence varies regionally and by ethnic group.

When someone suffers an asthma attack, the lungs’ airways inflame and swell, causing constriction, and this causes coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing. What this ultimately means is that less air reaches the lungs, and the patient is less able to breathe. Some asthma attacks are mild and can be treated with fast-acting inhalers, also called “rescue drugs.” Other attacks can be severe, causing the lips and/or face to turn blue due to severe difficulty breathing. Severe attacks are also sometimes characterized by sweating and an abnormally rapid pulse.

AN ASTHMA MEDICAL ID COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

Over time, people with asthma may learn what triggers their asthma attacks and are thus better able to avoid having serious episodes. However, not all allergens are avoidable, and not all asthma attacks are caused by allergies. In fact, many asthma attacks are caused by chemicals, exercise, smoke exposure, and stress.

While most asthma attacks are treatable with rescue drugs such as inhalers, sometimes an inhaler is too far away to be reached. Other times, the attack may be extreme. In both instances, those surrounding the person suffering an asthma attack need to know what to do and how to help. By wearing medical ID jewelry, those with asthma can have their diagnosis and treatment protocol on hand in the event they are unable to speak. Additionally, if EMTs do need to respond, knowing the cause of someone’s inability to breathe can contribute toward faster, more effective treatment.

If you have asthma, wearing medical ID jewelry is imperative. We recommend listing your name, diagnosis(es), any medications, all allergies, and emergency contact numbers. Here are some examples of what to engrave on your asthma medical alert jewelry:

What type of medical ID is right for me?

Our custom-engravable medical ID jewelry is just that: custom engravable. That means you can choose whatever style you like because the same Lauren’s Hope medical ID will work for any condition.
  • Interchangeable medical ID bracelets

An interchangeable medical ID is composed of a bracelet strand with a lobster clasp at either end and a removable medical ID tag. You can purchase multiple strands and continue using the same medical ID tag. If your personal information changes, you can simply replace the custom-engraved medical ID tag.
  • Non-interchangeable medical ids

Non-interchangeable or traditional medical IDs have affixed medical ID tags for an all-in-one solution.
  • MEDICAL ID CUFFS

Pull gently to open, put it on, and squeeze tighter for the right fit every time. Cuffs are an excellent option for people who experience swelling of the extremities, those with dexterity challenges, and those who have had weight loss surgery and are looking for the ultimate in adjustability.
  • MEDICAL ID necklaces

While some people simply prefer medical ID necklaces to bracelets, others choose necklaces because they cannot wear bracelets in the workplace. In any case, EMTs and other first responders are trained to check neck and both wrists for the internationally recognized medical symbol.
