Sulfa allergies are allergies to a family of drugs called sulfonamides. Some sulfonamides are antibiotics, while others are not. Interestingly, people who are allergic to antibiotic sulfonamides are not necessarily allergic to non-antibiotic sulfonamides. Sulfa antibiotics carry about a 3% risk of an adverse reaction, which is similar to the incidence rate of penicillin allergies. Also noteworthy is that some people are more likely to have sulfa allergies than others, including people with metabolic and immune disorders.

Sulfa drug allergies are dangerous because sulfonamides are such common medications and the reactions can be life threatening. In an accident or emergency situation, medical ID jewelry can inform EMTs and ER physicians of your allergy(ies), allowing them to avoid compounding an emergency situation with a potentially negative reaction and focus on treating the issue at hand.

A SULFA DRUG ALLERGY MEDICAL ID COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

If you have a sulfa allergy, wearing medical ID jewelry is imperative. We recommend listing your name, diagnosis(es), any medications, all allergies, and emergency contact numbers. Although commonly misspelled as sulfer, sulfur, or sulpher, allergies to sulfonamides should be engraved as, “sulfa” allergies. Here are some examples of what to engrave on a sulfa allergy medical ID:

What type of medical ID is right for me?

Our custom-engravable medical ID jewelry is just that: custom engravable. That means you can choose whatever style you like because the same Lauren’s Hope medical ID will work for any condition.
  • Interchangeable medical ID bracelets

An interchangeable medical ID is composed of a bracelet strand with a lobster clasp at either end and a removable medical ID tag. You can purchase multiple strands and continue using the same medical ID tag. If your personal information changes, you can simply replace the custom-engraved medical ID tag.
  • Non-interchangeable medical ids

Non-interchangeable or traditional medical IDs have affixed medical ID tags for an all-in-one solution.
  • MEDICAL ID CUFFS

Pull gently to open, put it on, and squeeze tighter for the right fit every time. Cuffs are an excellent option for people who experience swelling of the extremities, those with dexterity challenges, and those who have had weight loss surgery and are looking for the ultimate in adjustability.
  • MEDICAL ID necklaces

While some people simply prefer medical ID necklaces to bracelets, others choose necklaces because they cannot wear bracelets in the workplace. In any case, EMTs and other first responders are trained to check neck and both wrists for the internationally recognized medical symbol.
